92 Days of Winter Audio/Polaroid/Prose Speculations

A collection of audio/polaroid/prose speculations on days spent at Cape Paterson's Bay Beach during the COVID winter of 2020.

Winter, Day 4
Rockpool dreaming

[Audio: Rees Quilford reads 'Winter, Day 4']

Daydreaming
afloat
feet in the air.

Burnt emulsive
cold water imagining
sun scars.

A world torn asunder.

Winter, Day 7
Gateway to golden beaches

[Audio: Rees Quilford reads 'Winter, Day 7]

A weathered sign
guards the gateway.

This community place,
this regulated space.

Strong currents, submerged rocks, slippery rocks,
unsafe, unstable cliffs, it warns.

No camping, no horse riding, no fires, no motorbikes,
don’t touch the shellfish, no dogs in summer, no dogs off the leash,
it preaches.

NO SMOKING!, it yells.

That petty bureaucracy
eagerly awaits new COVID rules.

That petty bureaucracy
eagerly awaits new COVID rules.

Winter, Day 18
Swimming with friends

[Audio: Rees Quilford reads 'Winter, Day 18']

Teenage summers
happened here.

In the water
and the dunes.

Drinking,
kissing,
fighting.

Winter, Day 60
Drinking, kissing, fighting.

[Audio: Rees Quilford reads 'Winter, Day 60']

Side by side we stride
into the clear, calm sea.

Nahla is a water dog,
but this is easy going.

My thoughts turn to false hopes,
declining infection curves.

Rolling onto my back,
I drift from the security of the shore.

Watch the sprase clouds
trace through the crisp blue sky.
